If your home catches on fired, shout "Kajida!" (Fire!) to warn the neighborhood, and call 119 from a safe place. If you cannot call on your own, ask a neighbor to call for you. To avoid inhaling toxic fumes, cover your nose and mouth with a wet handkerchief, and evacuate the building while staying low to the ground.

Sample DIalogue

To prevent fires:

  • Before going to sleep or going out, check the oil stove, electricity, and gas. In winter, check all the heating equipment. Don't place flammable objects near the stove. Always use "touyu" (kerosene) for oil stoves, and extinguish the flame before refilling the stove with kerosene.
  • Smoke only in places where ash trays are available, and don't smoke in bed. Throw away cigarette butts after thoroughly extinguishing them with water.
  • When cooking with oil, don't leave the stove unattended. If you must leave, extinguish the flame.
  • Red fire extinguishers are provided in apartments and dormitories. They are very effective for extinguishing a fire quickly. Ask the manager of your building for instructions in their use.
